Although Malta became independent from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1964, its proclamation as a Republic was not achieved until December 13, 1974, when constitution was revised, with the State of Malta becoming a republic; same year Sir Anthony Joseph Mamo was named as the first president of the country.

For this reason, this public Holiday is one of the most important in the island. Different tributes are organized in its main square, St George’s, in the heart of Valletta, the best way to await the arrival of Christmas and say goodbye to the year.
